Ferrari is visiting the past with its upcoming V-12-powered grand tourer, the 612 Scaglietti, naming the car in the old tradition by first listing the engine displacement (6 liters) and then the number of cylinders (12), followed by the name of a man who shaped many of the finest Ferraris, Sergio Scaglietti.

Scaglietti designed cars at Ferrari from the company's inception, working hand-in-hand with Enzo Ferrari and penning cars not by pencil and paper, but by sculpting with aluminum.

The replacement for the highly successful 456M, the 612 Scaglietti features a roomy interior for four enhanced by significantly larger dimensions, a 132-pound weight reduction, and an all-aluminum structure.

* All-aluminum space frame chassis and bodywork construction: first time used on a 12-cylinder Ferrari; built at the Scaglietti light-alloy facility; 60 percent increase in overall structural rigidity.
* A mid-front layout with the engine mounted behind the front axle; gearbox and differential located in the rear to ensure that the center of gravity is kept as far back and as low as possible.
* Weight distribution: 46 percent front, 54 percent rear.
* Active damping and CST stability and traction control system, used for the first time on a Ferrari.
* 65-degree V-12 engine: 533 horsepower at 7250 rpm
* Conventional six-speed manual gearbox or a new-generation electro-hydraulic six-speed F1A manual with automatic shifting and clutch.
* Styled by Pininfarina designer Ken Okuyama; features scalloped sides that recall the famous 375 MM, which was penned by Pininfarina for Roberto Rossellini, who gave the car to Ingrid Bergman.
* Luggage compartment boasts 8.5 square feet of cargo area—25 percent more than the 456M's—which can hold a five-piece Ferrari luggage set or two golf bags.
* Instrument panel and steering wheel-mounted commands designed for maximum driver control; dual-zone climate control; and a premium Bose sound system.
